Choosing a Mentor

The first thing that you will need to do when you are considering choosing a mentor is to figure out exactly what you are choosing a mentor for. Is this a mentor to help you parent better, a mentor for writing, a mentor for making money? You will need to know exactly what you are looking for.

Once you have made this decision you will then start looking for someone who has been there and done a good job. This person should have many experiences and be able to know exactly how to assist you along the way.

In a good mentor and mentee relationship both parties will benefit. The mentee will learn from the mentor and the mentor should learn skills like leadership skills from the mentee.

You may want to ask around to people who can recommend a mentor to you. You should be clear with these people what you are looking for. This will keep you and your contacts from wasting time in search of a mentor that may not be what you were looking for.

You may find that you have had mentors in your past. This people are not necessarily known as a mentor during this time. These are people which you have learned from and have helped you grow in different areas of your life. These may have been teachers, friends, colleagues, or even family members. You may want to consider if a past mentor might be what you are looking for when choosing the mentor that you need.

Once you have chosen a mentor you will need to decide how this person can help you. What skills do you need help with or what traits do you need help possessing. You will need to be able to share the conclusions that you have came to with your mentor. This will help them in knowing how they are to assist you.

You will want to be sure that you are constantly having good communication with the mentor that you have chosen. You will need to let them know the things in which you are looking for. You will also need to keep the updated on new things that you might need mentoring for. This will help in making sure that you gain the most out of the mentoring experience.

Many people will need mentors in their lives for many different reasons. Maybe you are looking to open up and new business you might look for a person who has retired that has been there with success before you. You should also know that while you learn from your mentor�s success you also learn from your mentors mistakes. This will help in keeping you from doing the same. This being said you will want to make sure that you ask your mentor about things like where they went wrong, as well as what they did to succeed. All of these things mentioned above are important both on your search for finding a mentor and also while you are being mentored to.
